As dramaturge, Brian has been developing new writing with playwrights and companies in Ireland, the UK and France for over twenty years.

Irish audiences would remember the many shows he developed with Be Your Own Banana, including his collaboration with Edward Malone on the hugely popular Self-obsessed Tragedy of Ed Malone (“cult classic”: Irish Examiner).

In the UK, he has collaborated with young companies such as Fright Wig (look right, that’s him working with the awesome Izzie Major), Teatro Pomodoro and Colonial B*******ds.

More recently, he has been working with Eimear Tunney on her new show, Field and on Shane Casey’s The Man Who Talks To Statues.

Brian has directed over thirty plays. This doesn’t include re-mounts, as many of his shows have enjoyed revivals over the years. He has been Artistic Director of Be Your Own Banana Theatre Company (BYOB) since 2000.

Brian also works as a dramaturge, script-editor, playwright and performer.

THEATRE WORK

As director, Brian has worked in professional theatre, theatre for young audiences, youth theatre and education.

His professional work has been mainly in the area of new work for the Irish stage. This includes twelve world premiéres of Irish plays. Best known for his work with Be Your Own Banana Theatre Company, he also directed shows for Meridian and Granary in Cork.

His directed work has toured extensively in Ireland and has also been shown in the UK and the US. And two of his plays have been mentioned as theatrical highlights of the year in the Irish Times.

As playwright, Brian was very busy from 1999-2007. During this time, he co-wrote two very successful plays with Máirtín de Cógáin, De Bogman (2000) and Thailand: What’s Love Got To Do With It (2007). Both of these shows toured Ireland and internationally.

He also co-wrote The Ballad of Badger Bickle’s Youngfella (2002, with Alan Collins). This was a big hit at the Dublin Fringe (*****: Irish Times) and went on to enjoy an extensive Irish tour.

Brian returned to writing plays in 2020, and has started working on stage adaptations of little known classic literary texts. More about this on the Current Projects part of the website.

As performer, Brian has fairly humble ambitions. He has no interest in playing Hamlet or Stanley Kowalski, while having great admiration for people who do.

He is an accomplished storyteller, and has performed in Ireland, the UK, the US and France.

With his background in clown, he has always had ambitions to develop a solo show at some stage. The plan is for this to happen in 2025.
